Typography in the Woods

On a recent beautifully cold and sunny Saturday I went hiking in Parc de la rivière Doncaster. Located an hour north of Montreal, Parc Doncaster is a great place to spend the day discovering the barely-marked trails through the woods. I absolutely LOVED the directional signs for the paths, particularly the old weathered ones. I took the opportunity to test out the camera on my iPhone 4S and I was really impressed with the amount of detail the camera captures.

Parc Doncaster’s trail signs were not consistent. Most of them weren’t even made out of the same material, let alone size, colour, typeface etc. It was fun discovering what the next trail marker was going to look like.

The Sketchbook Project: Part 1

Today was a GREAT mail day!

A couple of weeks ago I signed up for The Sketchbook Project, a project run by the Art House Co-op in Brooklyn. Today I received a package in the mail containing my new sketchbook as well as a welcome letter and the rules. I couldn’t be more excited!

The Sketchbook Project is a world-wide initiative that invites artists of any level to participate by filling the pages of a sketchbook and then mailing it back to the Art House Co-op. After the sketchbooks are cataloged (each one has a barcode on it), they head off on a whirlwind world tour across the U.S., Canada, England, and as far as Australia, giving a chance to artists from around the world to check them out.

The sketchbooks will then travel back to Brooklyn to be part of the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Art Library. They will also be digitized so that anyone from around the world will be able to view them online.

The theme I chose for my sketchbook is “Stitches and Folds.” I can’t wait to get started!

My blank slate: an empty sketchbook. I’ll post more updates as I get started on my sketchbook!

Typenotes: Summer reading for incoming MATD students  → typefacedesign.tumblr.com

Though I’m not a student of Typeface Design, I still love learning about it! I’m currently reading A view of early typography: up to about 1600. It’s been a little boring at points, but I’ve definitely learnt a lot about early printing and the mechanicals related to it.

As for this summer reading list for students preparing for the MA Typeface Design, I’m already an avid reader of the quarterly design magazine, Eye. I keep every copy on my shelf for future reference. I can’t wait to get started on another one of these books!

typefacedesign:

There are many good book and article lists on typography and graphic design that are worth checking out. This is not one of those: it does not replace, but adds to the standard reference lists for design. It is a very selective, short list specifically geared to students preparing for the MA…

Own A Colour

UNICEF and Dulux have teamed up for a great campaign to raise funds for UNICEF. They are selling each and every one of the 16.7 million colours that display on the average computer screen.

For as little at 1£ you can own a colour and help save a child’s life. I’ve chosen my colour as #a14600, RUST. It’s the orange colour that I use on my Behance and twitter profiles.

Also, Roger Moore is their spokesperson. How cool is that?

What colour will you choose?
