I recently designed this asterisk as part of Font Aid VI: Aster Affects, organized by the Society of Typographic Aficionados, uniting the typographic and design communities to raise funds for Red Cross relief efforts after the events of Hurricane Sandy.

From www.typesociety.org:

“The project theme was represented in a typeface consisting entirely of asterisks and other star-inspired symbols.

Over 250 designers from 41 countries contributed glyphs to the project. Behind the scenes, volunteers Neil Summerour, Delve Withrington, and Grant Hutchinson compiled, assembled, and tested what would become the final typeface.”

I am incredibly proud to announce that our wedding invitation, a project I designed & developed, was chosen as one of the award-winning designs in the most recent HOW International Design Awards!

This highly selective and well-regarded competition sponsored by HOW Design magazine, now in its 20th year, recognizes outstanding creative work produced by individuals and creative agencies from around the world.

A team of design-industry veterans judged nearly 1,000 entries in 15 categories, and selected winning projects that demonstrated an ideal mix of concept, strategy and execution.

It’s been published in the March 2013 issue of HOW Magazine - on newsstands now!

The Montreal Police Twitter account, @SPVM, is one of the finest use of social media I have ever seen by a public institution. For the past several weeks, they tweet each night about the student demonstrations, being precise about their current whereabouts, in which direction they are heading, and if the protest is peaceful or has been declared illegal – crucial information for those participating in a march large enough that they can’t see the beginning or end.

As reported by OpenFile, on the night of Wednesday, May 16th, student journalists got caught up with a group of protesters surrounded by police. While other protesters were getting arrested / processed, LaPresse journalists were released. Student journalists from Concordia and McGill, meanwhile, were kept detained because they “were not members of the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec.”

Within minutes the student journalists notified the @SPVM through Twitter that they were detained and that police on the scene weren’t able to release them. @SPVM responded to the student journalists directly, and a short time later, having been notified by those tweeting for @SPVM, police at St-Catherine and Mansfield released the five student journalists.

Using social networks to get the latest news updates is nothing new – but this is the first time I’ve seen a group or organization with authority use it to have a conversation directly with the public in real time.

It goes far above and beyond what traditional print media (or even other online web media) can do in terms of interacting with the public in times of unrest. If you tweet @SPVM a question, they will (most likely) answer in a timely fashion. It was a short time ago that only the press had access to minute by minute information. It is now available to anyone with a smart phone or internet connection – and that means a safer public demonstration for everyone.

I Survived FITC Toronto 2012

I attended my first FITC Toronto conference and made it out ALIVE! Three action-packed days of education and inspiration. I gained some new twitter followers, and even managed to fit in some hang-time with friends! Here’s a brief chronological run-down of the fun that was had!

SUNDAY

Registered for FITC
Checked into the hostel (private room! I’m moving up in the world)
Visited with Serah-Marie who fed me delicious food!
Checked out the new WORN office

MONDAY

Day 1 of FITC Toronto!
10:00am: Tony Ke – Steve Jobs Called My Work Shit, and Welcome to the Post-PC Era
11:45am: James White (Signalnoise)– Design Renegade “You gotta be out in the woods.”
Picked up a sweet “The Scientist” print from Signalnoise
1:50pm: Adobe Keynote Speech
3:05pm: Andreas Muller – The Business of Making Digital Art
Dinner with Ted & Holly at an Ethiopian place! Ate with my hands and it was delicious
Drinks with Ted & Holly at a bar called Three Speed
FITC Opening Party at the Hoxton. Spoke to a bunch of strangers!

TUESDAY

Day 2 of FITC Toronto!
Decided to sleep in – serendipitous that the talk I was planning on going to first thing in the morning was cancelled. I didn’t miss ANYTHING by pressing that snooze button!

Met Creative Niche and was able to thank them in person for sending me to FITC Toronto!

Ran back to my hostel to pick up my bags and cabbed it to the train station! Montreal-bound!

Yeah – it was a busy three days. My schedule didn’t even leave much room for sleeping, but holy cow was it FUN!

PS: I met a few people over the past couple of days who gave me a hug at our introduction. I guess this is the Toronto version of the Montreal double-cheek kiss? I love it!

PPS: Writing this blog post with free wifi on the VIA train! I feel so classy!

My FITC Toronto Schedule

Tuesday I found out that I won a conference pass to FITC in Toronto, courtesy of Creative Niche. (It was a contest on Twitter, and I re-tweeted like crazy!) I promptly bought train tickets to Toronto (half price!) and booked a few nights in my favourite hostel in downtown TO. (And spoke to my boss, who graciously let me take 3 days vacation on very short notice!)

Future. Innovation. Technology. Creativity. FITC is for digital creators: designers, developers, digital artists and everyone in between! This will be my first big conference. I’m excited and not too sure exactly what to expect, but really looking forward to the adventure! These are the sessions I’m planning on attending:
